Train journeys

We will be taking morning the train from Oslo to Trondheim late August. I hear it's quite beautiful.
From Trondheim we will be taking the Hurtigruten Express to Bergen.

We are also looking at Norway in A Nutshell from Bergen to Oslo, but if the views are similar, not sure if it's worth our time.

What would you suggest? Do both trips?

Last summer we took the Hurtigruten from Trondheim to Bergen. It was our first "cruise"! It was beautiful, but a lot of the travel was at night so we missed the scenery, and the fjord was large enough that we didn't get the soaring walls that are talked about in the Nutshell. From Bergen, we took part of the Nutshell. They were doing track maintenance so we were bussed part of the way out of Bergen, then picked up the scheduled train farther up the line and into Oslo. Going over the mountain spine was spectacular. We didn't do the nutshell spur line into Flam or ferry from there. We feel like we missed the real feeling of the fjords and are therefore going back this summer to spend 3 nights in Balestrand (across the fjord from Flam). Our son lives in Norway, so we will have many opportunities for going back, as Rick suggests.
