When I first started looking into this route it was a direct train for a few hours. Now I'm looking at early June and it has become a 19 hour multi change train.
Did I miss some news about this?

Where are you looking? Trains on the route are operated by SJ so have a look at www.sj.no
There should be a couple of daily direct trains. Currently traffic is reduced due to a bridge being destroyed by a flood, but it is scheduled to reopen in May. (You can follow the repair works here: https://kunde.byggekamera.no/?p=821&c=1068 )
