We are taking a train from Oslo to Bergan on 9/20. Is there food on the train? Are reservations necessary and if so who should I make them through? Thank you.

I did this in May of this year, from Bergen to Oslo. There is a small dining car, but I would suggest you bring your own lunch and drinks, and snacks with you.
That is the train website; you just enter your destination and starting point and how many people, and it will bring up the schedule. I don't think you need to book in advance, but someone mentioned that it's cheaper to purchase tickets in advance. They probably have an app you can download, and then you can store your tickets on it or save them to your wallet on your iPhone.
The trains in Norway are very clean and safe. It's about a 7-hour journey from Oslo to Bergen by train, but very beautiful scenery along the way.

We are taking the Oslo-Bergen train on Sept 9. We booked in advance for cheaper tickets. Also, the train is known to sell out during busy times. Many tour operators book up seats for their Norway in a Nutshell tours. They do have a refundable ticket option.

We went Bergen-Oslo on July 28. Train was never full. Scenery was great. Personally, I don't see what NiN adds except for a massive fee. We saw plenty of pretty stuff.

There is strike action on the route on Sunday 20 September. Only the 1619 and the 2252 night train are running. Saturday has bus replacements, but none currently advertised for Sunday.
There are normal buses at 0940 and 1220, both with a change en route.
PS- You can't route via Stavanger either, then the very scenic bus ride up the coast to Bergen, as the Stavanger route has scheduled engineering work, so rail replacement bus from Oslo to Kristiansand, then train Kristiansand to Stavanger.

Norway in a Nutshell is not just the train between Bergen and Oslo. It gives travelers a wonderful taste of Norway in a relatively short amount of time.
It incorporates a very scenic bus ride from Voss to Gudvangen, the spectacularly scenic ferry trip on the Naeroyfjord and Aurlandfjord from Gudvangen to Flåm and the very scenic Flåmsbana back up the mountain to Myrdal. Throw in an optional tour to Stegastein Viewpoint and you'll have a fantastic day or 2.
IMO, the train components from Bergen to Voss and Myrdal to Oslo were the lowlights of our DIY Nutshell tour.
