Thoughts on this Norway itinerary as part of larger Scandinavia trip?

Hello All,

Would you please let me know your thoughts on this proposed Norway itinerary in July? I have included some additional questions below the proposed itinerary. We will have two days each in Copenhagen and Stockholm before arriving in Norway.

Day 1: Bergen
• Flight from Stockholm to Bergen
• Spend day and night in Bergen

Day 2: Sognefjord excursion
• Bergen 8am train to Voss. Bus to Gundvagen.
• Ferry from Gundvagen to Flam
• Rent car in Flam
o Take Aurlandsfjellet Snow Road, with Stegastein viewpoint
o Glacier viewpoint, which is not far off the road to Gerainger. Near the Glacier museum, at Braevasshytta Restaurant.

Day 3: Geirangerfjord Excursion
• Continue drive to Geirangerfjord
• Catch boat in Hellesylt. Ideally would do small boat excursion before taking car ferry to Geiranger.
• Drive the Ornevegen (Eagle Road) north (uphill) toward Eidsdal ferry to Linge
• From Linge head north via Fv650 to Alesund (1.5 hrs). Dinner in Alesund.

Day 4: Alesund
• Spend day in Alesund
• Late afternoon/evening flight to Oslo

Day 5: Oslo

Day 6: Oslo (evening flight to Copenhagen for return flight home next morning)

Questions:

-My hope is that this itinerary, while busy, is still reasonably doable. Given that we'll be in three large world capitals, I don't want to short-change the scenic part of the trip in Norway. If you think it's too much, where would you cut?
-Assuming the itinerary above, where would you recommend we stay on the way from Flam to the Geirangerfjord given our proposed schedules on Days 2 and 3 and the time it will require to accomplish those things? Fjaerland seems like the most practical, if not the most scenic, option.
-Do you recommend a high-speed boat excursion on the Geirangerfjord at Hellesylt or, given the time constraints, should we be content with just taking the car ferry? (We'll need to take the ferry regardless.)
--I'm inclined to make the drive to Alesund on Day 3 rather than stopping in Geiranger or another town near Ornevegen, but please let me know if you think that's inadvisable.

Many thanks for any assistance you can provide!

I'm curious why you don't rent a car in Bergen and return it in Oslo. As it is you are doing a lot of backtracking. You could drive, with stops for ferry rides through Geirangerfjord and Naerofjord and a train ride on the Flamsbana.

I checked one of the Flam rental agencies, and they say this about one-way rentals:

While one-way rentals are primarily offered in the low season, we are happy to consider one-way requests, to/from Oslo or Bergen, during the high season for rentals of 4 days or more. Please get in touch with us in advance, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your plans.

It seems you are looking at a high-season rental of less than 4 days, and looking to drop the car in Alesund. Have you found a rental agency that will accommodate you?

And though you don't ask about it, I think you are giving short shrift to Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Bergen. Especially Stockholm, where I spent four days and felt it wasn't enough time.

I agree with Lane that a one-way car rental is easily done. My daughter and I are going to be there in July. We're taking the train from Stockholm to Oslo, then picking up a rental car in Oslo and driving to Bergen, although we're stopping for two nights in Flan to do some kayaking on the Naeroyfjord and see some of the sights in Gudvangen and so on.

It is true that there is an extra fee for a one-way rental, but I figure with the time we're saving and the gas we would be spending money on, we will come out ahead.

With interhuman respect: it reads a little bit like Norway as mix of pass-by and drive-through. It seems you under-estimate the distances and landscape; only by driving Aurlandsfjellet you will elevate 4 times the highest hill of Ohio (up and down). Also the weather can play a significant role.

D2: no appropriate car rental in Flam. Rent in Voss or Bergen when leaving.
D2: over-packed at the end imo

D3: Helleysylt ferry is enough.

D4: Alesund is waste of time on your level of rushing through. Or do you just need the next airport?

D5 needs a little more details.

And agree that 2 days for Copenhagen and Stockholm is some kind of a joke.

You can do all this but it would not be my way of traveling and I am a fast traveler. What I miss is depth in doing / exploring but maybe this is not your current way of traveling - well knowing that most US Americans have not much vacation. Seems you have no interest in culture?

But this is the difference of traveling the US and Europe. In Europe a lot of places such as the mentioned capitals have multiple levels of history and belongings. Btw: none of the three capitals you plan to visit was always the capital of its country - such as Washington D.C..

Take care of the places' names when navigating.

Tip: Do not carry smartphone only. A good travel zoom camera with optical zoom up to 30x is necessary for that area.

Mark, it sounds like Fred has two full days for Copenhagen and an additional two days for Stockholm. I spent three nights in Copenhagen, which was two full days, and felt that was a good amount of time to explore. I would have liked more, but didn't have it, so that was fine with me. I'm planning on three nights in Stockholm this year, which will be two full days. I think again that will be enough time to get a taste of the area, hopefully to come back someday.

We're looking at doing a Copenhagen-Norway trip later this year, so I'll be asking for Denmark suggestions:)
