Svalbard

I recently returned from Svalbard where I took a Hurtigruten Expedition around the archipelago, including a visit to Ny Alesund. We also spent a night in Longyearbyen and explored the town. I've posted a trip report on the trip report page, but thought it worth mentioning here in case anyone is planning a trip to Svalbard as I might be able to help having being there very recently.

Hello Skyegirl, I’ve been looking at one of the Hurtigruten Expeditions in Svalbard for next year. I haven’t done very much research yet. Would love to read your trip report, can you post a link? The temperatures are much colder in Longyearbyen. Were you able to stay warm with layers? I read their packing recommendations and wondering about packing a bunch of cold weather clothes and boots. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

The trip report is posted on the trip report section of this site. If you go up one level to travel forum you can find the section for trip reports.

When we were in Longyearbyen it was around -2 centigrade, and only felt cold when windy. But I am from the north of Scotland! You would want warm layers and a waterproof and windproof jacket. If going on a Hurtigruten Expedition they give you ashell jacket but the size range is poor and they are rubbish for women with hips as they are essentially men’s fit.
