We will be in Flam for 2 nights in June, and have booked a kayak lesson for our family of adults and kids. We would also like to get to the Viewpoint but would rather avoid a tour. How hard is it to get there by bus? It seems like this is worth the effort. Is it? We also plan to hike to the Brekkesfossen waterfall. Any other ideas for hikes or events around Flam?
Also, is it possible to book dinner at one of the popular places ahead of time?

There are no regular buses to Stegastein that I know of. You can walk from Aurland, it's not that far. But it is around 650 m change in elevation, so it is a bit steep. Another option is to take a taxi to the viewpoint and walk back.
