Staying in the Fjords

Hello, I will be traveling to Norway in July and would like some advice on the following questions:

  1. I plan to begin NiN but stop at Flåm to experience Fjord country for a couple of nights. What is the best town to stay in? I’m considering Balestrand or Sogndal, as they seem to have the best choice of hotels. Any other recommendations?

  2. The alternative would be to push on to Bergen, stay for a few nights, maybe rent a car and then explore the fjords using Bergen as my base. Any pros/cons to doing this vs #1 above?

  3. I am looking for recommendations for tour companies for a glacier hike, kayaking and fjord safaris.

Thanks!

The fjords are pretty but far from the most beautiful country we've ever seen. And it's pretty quiet out there.
We really liked Bergen, home to the most beautiful people we've ever seen. That's where I suggest staying.

The fjords near Bergen are nice but are nothing like the fjords further north up the coast. If you can you should fly up to Alesund and go to the Geirangerfjord and some of the passes such as the Trollstigen. Some of the most dramatic views I've seen in Europe.
