Sognesfjord for a couple days this Sept- need recs!!

Hi! My sister and I are traveling to Norway for a few days 9/12-15 prior to heading to Stockholm.
Flying into Bergen and staying one night, going to Sognesfjord and planning to stay overnight for a night in either Flam or Aurland (have tentative res in Flam), then back to Bergen for a day/night before flying out.

1)Has anyone done the "Sognesfjord in a Nutshell" via the fjordtours.com link ?
Or done this on their own?
Any thoughts on either?
2)Any recs for activities while in the Fjord?
Consider cruising the Naeroyfjord and if so, how?
Specific hike near/around Flam?
3)Strong feelings of which city to stay in while overnight x1 in Sognesfjord?

Thanks so much!
Blessings, Jennifer

My wife and I just returned from Norway. We thought about staying in Flam but found it to be a very busy tourist hub. We followed the advice of many on this site and took the Flam to Balestrad express boat. Balestrad was one of the highlights of our trip. Beautiful, quiet fjord town. We were able to visit the Hopperstad Stave Church in Vik with a short ferry ride (stunning). The TI also offers bike rentals for some very scenic rides and kayaking on the fjord. We then took the express boat to Bergen. Highly recommend Balestrand!

I agree wholeheartedly with beburton.

I stayed two nights at the Balestrand Hotell in May, and I rented a car for a day and drove a route of spectacular beauty, and I didn't see another tourist for the entire day.

Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to see the Naeroyfjord (except from the express boat, when we stopped in the Sognefjord at the entrance to the Naeroyfjord.

If you do end up staying in Flam, the TI there has a good map of hiking trails. I had a few hours to kill while waiting for the express boat and I hiked to a waterfall.
