In the August 2013 edition of "Northern European Cruise Ports", Rick Steves mentioins the Sognefjorden Sightseeing & Tours company several times. I can't find them anywhere, however. Does this company still exist? I didn't see an online update. Thanks for any help!
I find the same lack of info online using that company name, but they are still discussed in the pre-publication file I have for the upcoming (March) new edition of the Scandinavia book, e.g., this note regarding the Flam-Gudvangen route:
There are two boat companies to choose from: Fjord 1 and Sognefjorden. Between them, there are departures about hourly from Flåm to Gudvangen. Beware: The first ticket desk you hit in Flåm’s visitors center is the Sognefjorden boat desk, and they’ll sell you a boat ticket implying it’s your only option. Fjord 1 is the public ferry with cars and lots of open space. It stops at Aurland and Undredal, which is handy if you want to hop off and on along the way--though you’ll need to buy separate tickets for each leg of your trip, and it’ll end up costing you at least 85 kr more (be sure to notify the ticket-seller where you want to get off, to make certain they’ll stop). The Sognefjorden boat (same price, route, and journey time) is more of a sightseeing boat rather than a public car and post boat--but it’s mostly closed in. I much prefer the Fjord 1 boat because I like to be in the open air, I enjoy hanging out on the car deck, and the Gudvangen-Voss Nutshell bus connection in Gudvangen is immediate and reliable.
