I am looking to stay in a small town in the Sognefjord region. From previous posts, I will avoid Flam at all costs. RS does spend quite a bit of time on Balestrand. Balestrand looks nice, but I think that our logistics are better near Aurland. How long does it take to drive between towns? (I have the time for ferry rides from RS books). Has anyone stayed in Aurland or other nearby towns?

After walking the 3 day trek from Finse to Aurland we decided to stay in Flåm last July, staying at the HI Hostel. Our reasoning was the accessibility of the rail line to get us back to Oslo. Staying at the HI hostel we had access to a kitchen so were able to cook our own meals thus lowering the costs of the trip somewhat. While there, we took a day bus trip to the Stegastein overlook on one day and walked along the fjord to historic Otternes farm high on the hillside the next. You can read about our time in Flåm at

It has been 20 years since I drove in that region, but all went smoothly, and I also chose Aurland for my overnight (in a cute camping cabin near the water). www.viamichelin.com can be helpful for planning driving routes and times.
