Hello all,
My husband and I are arriving in Oslo May 7th 2025 for a 30 day Norway trip. We would like to have extended stays in 3 areas to experience Norway at a slower pace. We have 12 days booked in a Grünerløkka apartment which will allow us to fully appreciate Constitution Day 17/05 in Oslo. We then thought about 8 days in Trondheim and another 10 days in Bergen. My concerns are, rain in Bergen and if Trondheim is a good spot for extended stay. We will rely on public transportation exclusively. I realize weather is never a win or lose but if daily rain in Bergen during our visit is high, maybe another location is preferable. We will likely visit museums, galleries, hike, bike and find street fairs/markets, take day trips to outskirts for POI. Any thoughts on possible location options other than what I've mentioned that are better "hub" areas?
The west coast of Norway (like the west coast of Scotland) tends to be very, very wet. However, you've timed your trip to the driest time of the year in Bergen. The climate-summary chart in Wikipedia indicates it will rain, on average, 13.7 days that month with a total rainfall of 4.27".
Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim are all attractive, interesting cities. However, I would not travel to Norway for 30 days and spend all my nights in just three cities. It's a large country with very challenging geography. When you need buses, which you often do, to reach the most scenic areas, you're talking a slow form of transportation that may run very infrequently. A hub-and-spoke itinerary will be more limiting than you have probably imagined.
I urge you to really dig into a good guidebook, identify the key places you want to see and check the rail and bus schedules to be sure you have a practical plan.
Edited to add: Norway is very expensive. That includes inter-city bus fares. You may be surprised at the cost of day-tripping by bus as well as by train.
