Sights to See from Trondheim to Oslo

Hi - My sister and I are renting a car from Trondheim to Oslo. I understand the one way cost of a rental car but we want to get out and hike along the way down the E6 road. We are staying in Hjerkinn one night. We hope to see some Musk Ox and/or Reindeer around Hjerkinn, if we are lucky.

But I am stuck of what to see and do after leaving Hjerkinn to Oslo. We have another night or two available to us.

Our schedule is to fly into Copenhagen mid-August. Take the train from Copenhagen to Oslo and see the sights of Oslo. From there we are taking another train to Bergen. Do the Norway in a Nutshell tour. Then fly from Bergen to Trondheim. We will spend 3 nights in Trondheim and pick up our rental car to head south to Hjerkinn. We currently have a one night reservation in Hjerkinn. Then our schedule is blank. (The reason for one night in Hjerkinn is we initially were going to spend the end of our trip in Malmo, Sweden but now we're not certain if we want to see Malmo or not.) Anyway, I thought we'd drop off the rental car at the Oslo airport and fly to Copenhagen. We ultimately fly back to the US from Copenhagen on Sept. 8.

Any ideas of places to see, places to stay, or food to eat along our journey south from Trondheim would be appreciated.

It seems you will have 3 weeks. Why not taking the rental car when you leave Copenhagen and return it there? Then you are fully flexible and see things you will not see on the beaten paths such as NiN. I made some journeys by car (with my own) and see this as a great way to experience Scandinavia, esp. the country side. Tip: read "Getting around by car" from VisitNorway.

Reindeers you will find more in the North of Norway. In most cases they belong to someone (e. g. Sami family) and if they are hurt or killed by a car accident the driver has to pay the owner for the lost animal. More about reindeers in Norway.

At Bjøråa rest area (rasteplass) you will find a huge silver moose sculpture.

Between Oslo and Trondheim you have also the chance to drive one of two scenic roads of Norway on your way. Check routes Valdresflye and Rondane.

Thank-you, Mark! The silver moose is pretty impressive. We might have to go that way just to see it. And thank-you for the information on the two scenic highways. Let the fun begin!

Three more things on the way:

  2. Lillehammer region and cultural history mseum Maihaugen, Norway's largest open-air museum
  3. Brumunddal: sleep in Frich's hotel in the world's tallest wooden house
