Should I fit in Alesund/Geirangerfjord?

Hello,

My wife and I are planning a trip to Norway in mid-late September of this year. We are planning to fly into Oslo and spend a couple of days there to start. Then, we will do the NIN on the way to Bergen with probably a one-night stop in Flam or surrounding area.

We will then stay in Bergen. After that I am struggling with the rest of the itinerary. I am debating if it is worth it to go to Alesund and Geirangerfjord. We have the flexibility to add a few days to the trip.

A few questions:
1. How much time should we spend in Bergen? Is 1 night enough or should we spend 2 nights? We don't plan to do much hiking or anything like that.

  1. Is it worth adding on Alesund/Geirangerfjord? If so: a. How many nights should we allow for Alesund and also Geirangerfjord if we use Alesund as a home base?
    b. What is the best logistics for getting from Bergen to Alesund? Is flying on Wideroe the best way to go? c. Most likely our return flight home would be from Oslo to the US. Is the best logistics from Alesund to Oslo to fly again?

Adding extra flights isn't my favorite thing so is it worth it to see Alesund/Geirangerfjord? We're not much for long car trips so we prefer the public transportation route.

Thanks for any advice!

If you’re going all the way to Norway, It’s definitely worthwhile to see the Geirangerfjord and Alesund during the trip.. it takes just 2-3 days more and it will likely be among the most stunning visual memories. You also can tack on a couple other spectacular sights— the Trollstigen ( Troll’s pathway) and the Troll’s Wall—following the Geirangerfjord as they are only a 50-mile or 90-minute drive from Geiranger. We saw all those sights and a lot more with a rental car we picked up in Alesund and returned to Alesund 24 hours later. In the high-season, there are also buses that travel to those attractions.
Flying from Bergen to Alesund on a one-hour Wideroe flight is the most time-efficient way to travel and it actually costs about the same as taking the bus.
The descent itself on a flight to Alesund offers incredible views of a mountainous landscape unlike any other parts of Norway you will see during your itinerary.

I would plan to stay two nights in Bergen to have time to leisurely explore Bergen, the historic Bryggen neighborhood and museums, and to take the funicular up to the panoramic views of Bergen from Mt. Floyen.

Bergen definitely deserves more than 1 night. There are several walks you can do on Mt. Fløyen in addition to touring the Bryggen and several museums. Besides the sights in and around Bergen, you have access to other fjord itineraries.

If you overnight in Flåm, try to get to Stegastein Viewpoint. You may also have time for hiking or kayaking.

We spent 3 nights in Ålesund in 2023. One full day was spent cruising the Geirangerfjord. The next day we took a wonderful all day Trollstigen trip with LocalTrips AS that included several other beautiful stops.

We flew SAS from Oslo to Ålesund after taking the Nutshell from Bergen. Our trip started with the Hurtigruten coastal cruise from Kirkenes to Bergen.

Thanks everyone for the advice. We have planned 3 nights in both Bergen and Alesund and extended our trip an extra 2-3 days. Thanks also for the mention regarding Trollstigen as I hadn't thought of that.
