I'm in a very preliminary stages of planning a trip for August 2026 that focuses only on fjord country (14 days Bergen to Bergen). At this point, I think we're staying two or three days in Balestrand before heading north towards Loen. What's the most scenic way to make that drive? I see one option via the gaularfjellet but are there other scenic ways to get there? I'm perfectly fine if the drive takes all day, in the spirit of "getting there is half the fun". More info: we'll have a car and are very experienced alpine drivers in Europe; I'm already thinking about doing a portion of the gaularfjellet to do a bit of hiking as a day trip from Balestrand if that makes any difference
I experienced the early part of Gaularfjellet (from Balestrand) as a very scenic route. The rear part was still nice but less spectacular. In total absolutely worth driving. The rest to Loen is partly beautiful but needs patience with other traffic participants.
The more inner country option is imo too long to do it meaningful in one day.
