Scandinavia for 3 weeks

Considering these possibilities for late August:

  • Copenhagen to Bergen up coast of Norway (Hurtigruten) to Tromso

  • Back by train to Copenhagen through Norway or Sweden with overnight stopovers
    along the way

First-time 80yo (healthy and active) visitors to Scandinavia--seasoned, independent travelers who like to wander.

Any suggestions and experiences to share? Appreciate any input.

We did a two-week Scandinavia itinerary along this route (but this can be easily stretched to three weeks with more time in each city):
*Flew into Helsinki
*Ferry to Tallin, Estonia
*Ferry to Stockholm
*Train to Oslo
*Train to Bergen
*Norway in a Nutshell Bergen-Oslo
*Flew Oslo to Reykjavik.
(Obviously no visit to Copenhagen, which I wish we'd included, but hit it on a separate visit to NE Europe another trip. With three weeks, you could maybe work it in!)

In 2023 we took the Hurtigruten Coastal ferry from Kirkenes to Bergen. Followed by 2 nights in Bergen, a DIY Nutshell with an overnight in Flåm and 2 nights in Oslo before flying home to Ålesund for a few nights to see the Trollstigen and the Geirangerfjord.

Depending on your travel dates, the northbound Cruise may take you into the Geirangerfjord. Several of the excursions begin in 1 port and return to another port further up the coast. While the excursions can be pricey, some are definitely worthwhile. Cabins are small but well laid out, the food was very good and the staff was friendly and helpful.

We cruised in May and had everything from sunny to drizzling to foggy all in 6 days. Highlights of our 2½ weeks in Norway were the cruise on the dramatic Naeroyfjord and Stegastein Viewpoint on the Nutshell, a wonderful day trip to the Trollstigen and the Lofoten Islands.
