Planning a trip to Norway and either Denmark or Sweden. Any recommendations? 2weeks is length of trip. Will be relying on public transportation. Will probably go late September /early October 2024. Any suggestions for itinerary would be welcome. Thanks
For two weeks in Scandinavia a common route is Stockholm-Copenhagen-Oslo-Bergen or v.v., although Copenhagen-Stockholm-Oslo-Bergen is also possible. But it also depends a bit on what you want to see and do.
The average daily hours of sunshine drop precipitously in September and October in that part of Europe, so I'd take the trip as early as I could.
The Norway in a Nutshell route is a highly scenic way to get from Oslo to Bergen or vice versa. In terms of cities, Oslo and Bergen are the most interesting in Norway as far as I'm concerned, and the fjord area you see during the Nutshell trip is spectacular. (Insert weather caveat here.)
Stockholm is just beautiful, and Gothenburg was my second favorite Swedish city, but I'm not sure you have time for a lot of major cities. Stockholm plus a smaller place might fit better into your timeframe.
I haven't been to Denmark recently.
Exactly how many nights will you be able to spend in Scandinavia, not counting the night on the transatlantic flight to Europe?
If you decide on doing Norway and Denmark, I suggest you look at https://www.dfds.com/en/passenger-ferries for the transfer.
Norway is my favorite of the Scandinavian countries, with its majestic scenery. The fjords are amazing. In my opinion, it is best done on a cruise up the coast. We did one all the way to the North Cape, it was fantastic. Only thing by late September, not sure your Norwegian highways will not be snow bound. It is best to do the cruise in the Summer.
I would spend 3 days in Stockholm and 4 in Copenhagen and that area. You probably don't have time for the long cruise unless you skip either Stockholm or Copenhagen.
If I needed to skip Sweden or copenhagen, which would you suggest?
I personally would skip Copenhagen but others will disagree.
How much time will you have for not-Norway? I try to match my destinations to the time I have available. If just a few days, I'd go with Copenhagen rather than trying to see a chunk of Sweden.
We would have 4 days but one would be travel day, can’t do it all but definately Norway. I am not sure which place would be most interesting for first timer
Sweden would be a lot closer for geographical reasons, but it also depends on what parts of Norway you plan to visit.
In planning our trip this May, I thought we were going to have to skip Copenhagen. We start in Stockholm and ended up in Norway. I thought we'd have to fly out of Oslo and Copenhagen just seemed too tight. However, I was able to get an Icelandair flight from Bergen to start the journey home. That freed up enough time in our trip to make Copenhagen doable. We've never gone Icelandair before but the logistic look good for us.
