I am travelling mid May and really want to do a one day tour.
Since this is the shoulder season, I am having trouble finding an inexpensive way to do this. Unless, I do the "travel like the locals" itinerary which has mutiple (five?) transfers on
the way back from Gerianger. We will not have a car on this trip. Thank you!
Be careful, snow can block highways that time of the year.
Unfortunately, the Hurtigruten coastal ships don't begin sailing into the Geirangerfjord until June 3. That would cost about $108 per person, one way. (The website defaulted to US $; it might be a bit cheaper in NOK.) I'm afraid you'll find just about everything expensive in Norway. That includes public buses.
