We're renting a car mid June and figuring out our driving itinerary for about a week. From the map it looks like there should be a fairly direct route between these two towns, perhaps by ferry or by bus?
Yet, the map directions actually route us way around on a 2+ hr.drive. Where can I find help, and what am I missing?

I see the same on Rome2Rio. A bus that takes 55 minutes and a drive that takes 2+ hours. But a search on google maps shows you can drive with ferry on that shorter route. Maybe Rome2Rio uses bus company info for buses but for driving doesn't use ferries.

It is about 25 miles and includes a ferry, according to Google maps. Laerdalsoyri to Sogndalsfjora. It doesn't pertain to this route, but if you are using Google maps to plan other drives --- Google maps will not show you routes that are closed in winter, even though you are researching routes to drive at other times of the year.
