Round trip to fjords in one day (10-31-19) from Oslo

On 10-31 we want to travel from Oslo to Flom/ Myrdal see the fjords and return that same night . It looks like the earliest train is at 8:25 AM and the latest train leaves Myrdal at 5:25, pm but it is not clear that will have time to get on any of the ferries. Norway in a nutshell requires that you spend the night in Flom for the trip from Oslo which we can’t do. Help!

I think it is very difficult to do what you want in one day in that area. You could just take a boat around the fjord in Oslo.

Thanks! Didn’t know there were fjords near Oslo. Should we fly to Brogan and take a fjord trip from there ?

When I went in 2003, my Rick Steves Scandinavia book specifically mentioned that in the low season, a 1 day Norway in a Nutshell trip was not possible as a round trip from Oslo. In high season, there is an earlier train departing Oslo that does a 1 day trip.

Can you re-configure your itinerary to go from Bergen to Oslo, or vice versa, in one day? You can then use the Norway in a Nutshell route to connect these two cities (that's what I did) and this works in a single day, year round.

The NiN combination mode trip use to be promoted as a 24 hour trip starting and ending in Oslo. Starting with the 8:25 am departure from Oslo, the train route went to Myrdal, transfering to the Flam train, then boat the fjords, bus, then train to Bergan. After a short layover in Bergan, return to Oslo via a night train arriving in Oslo the next morning.

Thanks but in the fall they canceled the night train so there is no way to completed on the scheduled Norway in a nutshell from Oslo as they require a night in Flom.Apparently the overnight train is only available in the summer

Thank you for info re Oslo fjords- the photos didn’t look as good for Oslo as for the Western Coast -I really appreciate your responses and the ones ahead as well- thank you very much for being active on this forum

Why don't you rent a car from Oslo, drive to Myrdal & park at the station, do a round trip on the Flambana + Cruise at Flam & then drive back to Oslo at night.

We just returned, doing NIN on our own but being guided by the NIN website. After the train trip Oslo-Myrdal-Fläm, leaving at 8:25, we arrived in Flåm about 1:30 or 2::30 as I recall, which gave those doing the route in one day ample time to complete it. We elected to spend 2 days in Aurland and we’re so happy we did.

I think your difficulty is the time of year: fewer options are available at that time and daylight is shorter. Check into taking the ferry as far as Gudvangen and returning to Flåm by shuttle bus. That might get you back in time to get your train back to Oslo. There is a “chat” option on the NIN webpage, and the agent I spoke with was very helpful. They know the schedules well for every time of year and can tell you if what you want to do is possible or perhaps have a solution none of “us” have considered. Good luck with this challenge , hope you’re able to work it out.
