Researching a trip to Bergen

Hi all, I am looking into a trip to Noway in September 2026. My cousin and her husband are most likely flying to Oslo, but I'd like to fly into Bergen I think.

I definitely want to do a 2-3 hour boat ride on a fjord. I also want to do the funicular ride and probably visit the fish market. Is creamed herring a big thing in Norway? I never tried it but I would try one on my trip, lol.

Please recommend any one-day escorted bus trips outside of Bergen. I think I read there may be a fortress-like structure nearby, is that correct? I'm also very interested in nature. I don't know if Norway has any wildlife sanctuaries/parks etc. I am still searching for info. Thanks, Greg

Bergen is a wonderful place to visit. We were just there last month, for four days, and these are the things we enjoyed:

-Walking the Vidden hike from Mount Ulriken to Mount Floyen: https://en.visitbergen.com/things-to-do/vidden-hike-from-ulriken-to-floyen-p984113
Going this direction, you take the cable car up, walk to where the funicular is (about 8 miles, lovely scenery), and take the funicular down. If you like nature I think you'd enjoy this.

-Norway in a Nutshell- the round trip itinerary from Bergen that involves a train to Voss, bus ride to Gudvangen, ferry thru the Naeroyfjord to Flam, and train back to Bergen via Myrdal. You may be doing some of this already if you are meeting up with people in Oslo. This is probably the most popular day trip from Bergen and it's totally worth it, especially the ferry ride, which is two hours.

-Hardangerfjord- we took the ferry from Bergen to Rosendal thru Hardangerfjord- just under two hours each way. Amazing scenery and Rosendal is a nice place to spend a few hours.

The fish market is right in the centre and is not very big. We had a very nice lunch in the part of the market in a building across the water from Bryggen. I don't remember seeing creamed herring but the seafood was excellent.

I hope this helps get you started but happy to answer any other questions about these activities. Good luck with your planning.

I can't add much, but want to affirm all the recommendations above. Our trip was June/July 2023 and included the above.

We wanted to visit Grieg's home in a suburb of Bergen. It is possible to do by public transport, but there was a bus "tour" that left from one of the art museums in central Bergen. Transport and ticket with tour of the home and concert were provided. It made the excursion very easy.

creamed herring - love it. I don't remember finding it (I didn't look specifically) in Bergen, but it was big on breakfast buffets in Schleswig-Holstein Germany! I didn't find it tasted any different from what I can purchase in the US supermarkets. I think I remember smoked fish on Bergen breakfast buffets (Radisson Blu).

Fortress - you may be thinking Oslo?

Have you decided what you are doing yet, having pivoted away from Scandinavia to Portugal, and then to Prague?

The Bergenhus fortress is right there in the middle of Bergen, and the Akershus fortress in the middle of Bergen.

A half day fjord cruise from Bergen is the Mostraumen fjord cruise

There is a lot already on your other thread.
