Renting car for NIN Oslo to Bergen -- add-on tips/suggestions requested

Looking at renting a car for the route, but I wanted to see what I should add as follows:

Day 1 drive to Flam/Aurland, stay overnight. See Stegastein en route (maybe detour to Borgund stave church)
Day 2 take train from Flam to Myrdal one way, then bike down back to Flam
Day 2 one way fjord ferry Flam to Gudvangen, shuttle bus back to Flam
Day 2 -drive to Hardangerfjord area and stay somewhere there overnight
Day 3 sightsee second fjord town, then drive to Bergen

With these add-ons, I think I'd be getting the NIN scenic stuff plus additional detours at a fraction of the price since we didn't book NIN segments early enough for the cheap fares. Where would you suggest an overnight for Day 2?

Did you check higher costs for one-way car rental?

D1: I hope you know how far your detour will be.

D2: the highlight is not Flam, the highlight is the Naeroyfjord. So, do the ferry.

Tip: check-out the official scenic routes of Norway to explore more of other routes around.

The cost is much cheaper than the train rides and paying for either the e-bus or a taxi to/from Stegastein.

We rented a car in Voss for part of our self-directed NiN-like trip. No problems. Good to be able to access some more remote areas. However, I can’t believe that one-way car rental and fuel is less expensive than taking the train, (unless you are a group of 4 or 5, I guess).

Likewise, we rented a car at Oslo for a round trip to Jotunheim. Conveniently and easy, not particularly inexpensive.
