Rental car pick-up/drop-off in city centres (Oslo and Bergen)

Hi. We are planning to rent a car for five days in early July - driving from Oslo to Flam, then up to Gaupne/Nigardsbreen, and then car-ferrying back to Gudvangen and on to Bergen. (Lodging and car-ferry are booked.) We have two elementary-aged kiddos.

We think we would prefer to pick-up and drop-off the rental car from the city centres (Oslo Railway Station and Bergen Fjoesangveien 4) instead of from the airports, but these city locations are unmanned kiosks at times, so you have to swipe the exact same credit card and drivers license you make the reservation with. I am wondering if anyone has had experience with these locations.

We would prefer to not have to travel with the kids and luggage back to the airports to pick up and drop off the car, but we don't want to get stuck either!

(If you have recommendations on the drive, glacier hike, Sognefjord region for kids, etc, those are welcome too!)

Thank you.

Transportation into town from the Bergen airport is comparatively easy and cheap (by Norwegian standards) due to the existence of the light-rail line. In Oslo there's a regular train as well as a special, higher-cost airport-city train. I used the former. I qualify for the senior rate and only paid NOK 59. I guess the regular rate is probably about double that (or was, as of summer 2022).

I have no experience with car rentals in either location. Norway has quite a few hotels that encourage unattended check in--even some where that's really the only choice. I'd think the car-rental system would be well-designed, but one does read hotel reviews from people who struggled getting into their rooms.

Why? It is easy to take the train to the airport. The trains have plenty of space for both kids and luggage. Attempting to drive in central Oslo on the other hand is not a relaxing experience.
