Really Budget Winter Norway Trip

Hi there!

My two college friends and I are trying to go on a very budget one week trip to Norway this January over our winter break. We're trying to cut costs as much as possible in areas like accomodations/general spending so we can afford to travel around the country rather than stay in one place. My friends would like to see a lot of the classic places like Bergen, Tromso, Alesund, etc, but that is certainly a lot to fit in 7 days. With that said, we have no idea where to start with planning.

So basically, my question is what might be a good itinerary for three broke college kids who want to do as much as possible while there? And any advice on how to travel on a budget in an expensive country like Norway is also appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum, and I hope your trip goes well. We went to Norway last fall, and college was a long time ago for us, but saving some $$$ is still important. We didn’t go all the way north to Trømso, but I understand that wi yet is when it’s most popular. I don’t know if that means it’s more expensive in January than at other times, but do some lodging price searches Online.

Are you considering dogsledding or other winter activities in Trømso? Again, look into those, to see if they will meet your budget.

We did partially use Norwegian Air to get around, to Trondheim, then from Trondheim to Bergen, and from Bergen to Oslo. They’re a “budget” airline, and especially if you’re traveling fast and light, with minimal luggage, can be surprisingly affordable. Quick flights can cover long distances (like to/from Trømso!) better, faster, and probably cheaper than some other options.

We had a rental car to drive around fjord country, renting in Bergen and returning it there, before flying to Oslo. It gave us flexibility, but check on costs. Some of the places we went aren’t accessible in winter. Also, I believe it’s even more expensive for younger drivers, like under 25, and so that might not be a practical possibility for you. If you do wind up renting a car, though, get an electric one - Cheaper than a gas-fueled car, and EV’s in Norway also get discounted prices for tolls and car ferries.

Search for hostels in the places you’re interested in visiting. Shop for food at grocery stores. In Norway, 7-11’s are regular supermarkets, not just convenience stores.

Norway and budget travel can be hard to combine, but not impossible. Hostels can be a good option for (relatively) cheap lodging. But with 7 days, you are trying to fit a lot into the trip. Try to narrow it down a bit is my suggestion. You don't mention what you're interested in and what you want to see and do, so it's hard to give advice.

Regarding value for money and date of travel: Did you inform yourself enough about weather and daylight conditions?

In summer you can do 100-200% more of your time there because you will have much longer daylight and less weather restrictions.

I libe in Northern Germany - really way southern of Norway - and also here we have these restrictions to a significant extent.
