Thanks. I even have a friend who manages a quality private book shop but was hoping for a more personal review

Norwegian author Jo Nesbo wrote a series of books for children called Doctor Proctor. They're very silly books, if she likes that. They are available in the U.S. in English. I'm an old lady, but my fascination with Norway started when I was in 4th grade and read a book that was translated from Norwegian titled Miriam by Aimee Sommerfelt. It's about a Christian and a Jewish girl in Norway during WWII. I adored that book. It's out of print, but you can buy used copies on Amazon.

I'm a retired librarian, so I'd advise you to ask a children's librarian, of course.

Also, there's a book store in Cleveland called Clevo Books. that only sells books in translation. The staff there is very knowledgeable and they have a good selection of children's books.

Thank you, Mary. My mom and favorite aunt were librarians-a wonderful field

One of the big classics in Norwegian childrens litterature is Folk og røvere i Kardemomme by written by Thorbjørn Egner. Published in English as When the Robbers Came to Cardamom Town. Although she might be a bit old for it.

For older children, have a look at Kabalmysteriet (The Solitaire Mystery) by Jostein Gaarder or his later book Sofies verden (Sophie's World).

American Children’s book, but a classic that would engage any 9 year old. “Snow Treasure” by Marie McSwigan tells the story of how a village used children riding on sleds to get Norway’s gold bars past the Nazis and out of the country. It is considered historical fiction, but is based on some accounts from the time. The children are the main characters and the heroes in this book. Gives a glimpse of life for children during this time.

Hi Jeff, Carol now retired recommended “Snow Treasure” and I second the nomination. It was a favorite book of mine as a child and I recently purchased a copy for a favorite 10-year old. Love Norway, enjoy your trip!

I absolutely loved Snow Treasure! I read it in the 4th Grade. Whenever it snowed enough for sledding, I would try to get my friends to play "Snow Treasure".
