Railway shutdown for maintenance........help!!

I'd like to take my father on the Norway in a Nutshell tour, however the exact days that we would be leaving Bergen and headed to Oslo, the railway is scheduled for maintenance and different legs are not operating or the trains are cancelled altogether! My thought was to take a ferry from Bergen to Balestrand or Stahlheim and spend 1 night then take another ferry to Voss or Flam to catch a train to Oslo. Anybody have an opinion on which is better, Balestrand or Stahlheim? And any advice on the ferry would also be appreciated!!!

NSB would usually offer work around alternatives (e.g. bus service) for planned shutdowns.
