Places to stay between Oslo and Bergen

We are traveling to Norway for the Norwegian Birkebeiner on March 19, then extending our stay for a week. We would like to stay somewhere between Oslo and Bergen where we can be outside- hopefully snowshoeing, other winter fun. We will be driving, and will have 6 people including 2 teens. What town/area is recommended, and will there still be snow?

Consider some version of the Norway in a Nutshell combination travel mode tour from Oslo to Bergen and return.

Our first trip to Norway was a 10 day hut to hut ski tour ending in Sjusjøen some 20 years ago. We arrived a week early to adjust to time change etc and to experience more than Norwegian snow. We did the Nutshell tour overnighting in Voss before continuing to Bergen, spent two nights in Bergen before returning to Oslo by train. We were booked for the same Oslo hotel before and after the Nutshell tour and were able to have the hotel store our ski touring gear in their "left luggage" storage room and could do the Nutshell with a light backpack.

We did the Nutshell tour starting the Saturday before Easter Week and the train was filled with Norwegian families heading for their mountain huts. The baggage closets were filled with skis and overheads stuffed with backpacks. The Oslo to Myrdal train route stops at Geilo and Finse, ski villages in the Hardangervidda.

Finse is a perfect place to go cross country skiing. The snow lasts
untill the end of May.

Geilo and Hol Municipality are among the best areas in Norway for
cross-country skiing, and have more than 500 kilometers of groomed
trails, both in the valleys and on the mountain plateaus.

You can also ski in Oslo. Take the T1 metro to Holmenkollen (and visit the ski museum).

More than 2,600 km (1,600 miles) of prepared cross-country ski trails
run deep into the forests of Oslo. 90 km are lit for the special
atmosphere of evening tours.

The extended public transportation network of Oslo will take you to
straight to some of the city's most popular skiing spots.

Recommended options include: Metro line 1 to Midtstuen,
Holmenkollen, Voksenkollen or Frognerseteren Metro line 3 to Skullerud
or Mortensrud Metro line 5 to Sognsvann.

It's always free to take skis onboard!
