Oslo to Bergen Trains Sold Out

We're currently ticketed on a train leaving Oslo at 4:30 pm, arriving after 11 pm. Flight out of Bergen airport the following morning. We booked our seats 2 months ago; earlier trains have shown as sold out all this time. Is this common?

Also, does anyone have experience being ticketed like this and finding availability on an earlier train the week of (or day of) the trip? Late arrival is going to be very stressful, plus much of the trip will be in darkness. Scenery is obviously a major reason for our itinerary.

Being sold out on a Sunday in August doesn't surprise me.

What I would do, if you are in Oslo, is go to the train station and ask about likelihood of cancellations. (I'm sure there are plenty of people who speak English.

On the bright side, the sun doesn't start to set until around 9:30 PM.

If you have a ticket for a specific train the ticket is only valid for that train. If you want to take another train instead you need to change your ticket and how easy or expensive that is depends on what kind of ticket you have.

But there is not that much reason to worry about the views, sunset is 21:00 in Oslo and 21:23 in Bergen this Sunday. And keep in mind that there is a couple of hours of twilight after sunset.

As Badger says there is twilight and also the scenery gets much less interesting after Voss on the way to Bergen.

Thanks, everyone. I'll check once we get to Oslo. Good to know we're likely to see the best scenery even if we can't get an earlier train.

ETA: we couldn't find another train, as they were all full except the 6 am departure. We did get better seats, though.

How far in advance should we get tickets for the Oslo to Bergen train? Is there a chance that tickets might be sold out a month or two in advance of the scheduled train we want to take. We want a train on June 28, 2025.

Vy open bookings exactly 12 weeks before the date of travel.

In the first post on this thread, it is reported that some trains on the day the poster wanted to travel were sold our 2 months ahead of time.

We took the 16:45 (approx) train and it worked out fine. It was dark by the time we reached Foss, but Norwegians on the train told us we'd already seen the best scenery, and frankly I was approaching the point of overdose on beautiful scenery anyway.

If I were to repeat the trip, I'd overnight in Myrdal, do the Flåm Railway the following day and continue to Bergen by ferry. Seven hours of spectacular sightseeing needs to be broken up into pieces IMO. But it really is spectacular.

By the way, pay attention to what isn31c says about ordering tickets well in advance. Twelve weeks ahead. And pick your seats on the right side of the train if available, traveling east to west.
