Oslo to Bergen then south to Bokn family trip

Next summer will be our 50th wedding anniversary. My mother immigrated from Norway in 1927 and we are taking our children/spouses/SO there to celebrate. Our children are still working so we essentially have a week and two weekends to accomplish this task, thinking we can plan this over July 4th to pick up an extra day. My initial plan is to fly into Oslo, arriving sometime in the afternoon and spend the afternoon doing the RS Oslo walk and getting settled in from the long flight. Early to bed and spending the next 2 days in Oslo doing many of the suggestions from the RS guidebook. We then plan on taking the Norway in a Nutshell trip most likely doing it in 2 days. We then hope to spend a couple of days in Bergen before taking public transportation to Bokn, a small island about 4 hrs south of Bergen by bus. We still have family there and will spend the next couple of days with them checking out the ancestral home/business etc. Then back to Bergen where our children will fly back home (we are extending our visit by 1-2 weeks!).

I'd appreciate any comments on this itinerary and if the timetable is doable. Our children are in their 30-40's, like history, have no interest in clubbing etc. and are (like their parents) interested in off the wall activities. Some hiking is OK, but not the primary interest. Trips to fjords, the high cliff etc. interests us all.

Thanks
Neil

That sounds like a reasonable itinerary and perfectly doable. Although I wonder why your plan to fly back from Bergen? If you are in Bokn my first suggestion would be to look at flights from Stavanger which is much closer. Bergen has a larger airport so it might be easier to find good flights from Bergen, depending on your destination, but you should have a look av Stavanger first.

To inform yourself best about Norwegian culture ("family") I recommend visiting Norsk Folkemuseum.

From / to Bergen I recommend a rental car. you can use the longer but very scenic routes Hardanger and Ryfylke. Check out also Dronningstien hike.

For flying out check the inner European connectionsto international airports such as London, Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt. Bergen airport offers more European connections than Stavanger airport.
