Oslo to Bergen Stopover Recommendation

My wife and I will be visiting Norway in July. We are wondering if there is a good town to break up the Oslo to Bergen train ride for a night. I think it would be fun to see a smaller town, but it would be ideal to have something with decent lodging close to the train station and a place that would be interesting to spend a half day around.
