Can anyone recommend some good day trips out of Oslo? We were considering the Telemark Canal but it may not be doable as a day trip out of Oslo. Do any tour companies operate one to the Canal out of Oslo? Thanks, JimS.
The Telemark Canal is sort of day trip. If you went out to Dalen the previous night and caught the southbound boat the next morning then you arrive into Skien in time for an hourly train which gets you back to Oslo, around 9.30 pm.
You could do the paddle steamer Skibladner on Lake Mjosa. Depending on the day of the week the hourly commuter train to Lillehammer one way (the continuation of the train from Skien) and the Gjovik to Oslo line the other way.
How long are you staying in Oslo? Not a day trip and not out of Oslo, but Bygdøy Peninsula with the Kon Tiki and the Fram Museums and the Norwegian Folkemuseum make a pleasant outing. You can take the short ferry ride from City Hall to Bygdøy.
