My husband and I enjoy going to farmers markets around Seattle to purchase fresh produce and handmade items (e.g. jewelry, notecards, lotions). We'll be traveling to Norway in mid-May and are wondering if there's any such thing in the cities we'll be visiting? We realize climate and time of year probably won't yield as much in the way of fresh foods but hoping to find some crafts. Has anybody visited any?
Have in mind where you travel to. Seattle is by latitude south of Munich (Germany); around 1,000 US miles south of this region.
Mid-may is Apple blossom in Hardangerfjord area but way too early for own fresh agriculture products of the region. Partly very nice to drive around but on fjells (if already opened) it can look like this (link to photo, 2023 mid May on Ryfylke).
In Bergen of course the fish market offers manifold fresh fish and dishes. And they built a new market house for this because Bergen has nearly double of rainy days and over the double amount of rain per year compared to Seattle. So, open air is sometimes not a good idea. Little shops instead of market stands you will find around Tyske Bryggen and in the center (link).
Balestrand is very small. The largest second hand market at Sognefjord is book town Fjærland.
In and around Oslo the chances are likely a bit higher but also there you will find more little shops, e. g. in Grünerløkka.
btw: May 17 is Constitution Day with various open-air celebrations, e. g. Bergen.
Hint: Berlin in Germany is known for open-air and seasonal markets.
Thanks very much for the info MarkK! Bergen’s Fish Market and Grünerlokka look like good stops. I’m thinking of something more rustic, like what’s shown on this video: https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=edmonds%20farmers%20market. (You’ll need to scroll down a bit to "Explore Edmonds, Nov 9, 2024.") But you’re right, it's too early in the year and perhaps not as common as it is in Seattle.
Thanks for impression - I was thinking of such, seen something like this in New England's late summer.
One thing I found: https://www.visitoslo.com/en/whats-on/events/market-fair/ but never been there.
I know not topic here but for winter I suggest to visit German handcraft-oriented Christmas markets.
btw: you can also search for handcraft and design markets / events (example from Denmark).
Oh this link is exactly what I was looking for, something casual in the street! Thank you Mark!
