Trying to to book this route though VY website. States that this route is not on sale yet. Booking window begins 90-120 days ahead. I know I can book through RailNinja which will contact VY once tickets go on sale. I have seen other posts with people saying they have it booked and am concerned it will be sold out once the tickets go on sale on VY in May. For those who have already booked for this summer, who did you book this through? Should I wait and book with VY?
I would not use Rail Ninja under any circumstances. Google "Reviews Rail Ninja" and you will see why.
The trip between Oslo and Bergen is popular in the summer, so you are smart to stay on top of this. However, I cannot imagine you need to buy through a scammy, third-party provider when it's easy enough to monitor availability on the official rail website. At the moment, tickets are available through July 6, which suggests sales currently begin 90 days ahead. Now, sales policies can change unexpectedly, so I think it's prudent to re-check the situation pretty frequently--maybe twice a week? The fare between Myrdal and Oslo is variable, so you stand to save some money by buying the ticket as early as you can--assuming you are confident your trip will come off on schedule.
I'm in agreement with acraven. Stay away from Rail Ninja.
Where are you seeing posts that others have booked Flåm to Oslo via Myrdal for August? If they are doing the full Nutshell route between Bergen and Oslo they may have booked through FjordTours.
How are you getting to Flåm? Do you not need to book transportation for that, also?
Thank you for the advice regarding avoiding Rail ninja. We are taking the Sognefjord Cruise Bergen – Flåm. I have read a lot about how to book the “longer” NIN Bergen-Oslo by taking the fjord cruise Bergen-Flam. I always use Steve’s books as my planning guide.
I saw on this forum that others have NIN all booked for travel in July and got concerned that I need to book before the VY site releases tickets for the train portion: Flam to Myrdal to Oslo. I have looked at times and was concerned that all the tkts would be sold out if I wait to book 90-120 days out through VY vs fjord tours or another site.
You'll be fine waiting a bit. As acraven suggested, keep monitoring the vy.no site in case they open the schedule early.
Book your Flåm to Myrdal to Oslo as one ticket, not 2 separate journeys. And be sure you are booking all rail, no buses.
My NIN is in June and I was trying to book tickets in February. I first found the Myrdal to Flam ticket available, so only booked that portion and this was on 2/4 for 6/4 journey. On 2/27 I booked the Oslo to Myrdal leg. That had opened by that time and already many seats were sold. I did get left side by window though! This leg you can get a seat reservation.
What was important, I reached out to Customer Service and had a few emails back and forth with them - they were VERY response and nice. SO consider emailing them to get direction on when tickets may be available.

If you're planning to take the express boat from Bergen to Flam, that is not a scenic upgrade over the classic Nutshell route; quite the contrary. You will be missing the bus ride from Voss down to Gudvangen and the Naeroyfjord ferry trip between Gudvangen and Flam. The Naeroyfjord is much more scenic than the wider part of the Sognefjord the express boat traverses.
Another idea is to book through Fjord Tours (recommended in the Rick Steves Guide). I just booked the Sognefjord Cruise Bergen to Flåm and the train from Flam to Oslo for August. They have early-bird summer rates right now, so it's not too much more expensive than booking these separately and saves me from having to keep checking the VY site. Hope this helps!
We are doing the NiN diy one way bergen-oslo July 11th. I was able to book the fjord cruise gudvangen-flam via Norways best website and the flam-myrdal-oslo train on one ticket via the vy website. I booked these tickets last night.
