Greetings Fellow Travellers
We currently have one free day in Bergern (in between two Viking Cruises). We woul like to plan a same day round trip from Bergen to Flam. We would prefer to travel via train. This will be in mid-July 2026. Appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
Mike
IMO, the only reason to go to Flåm is because it is the transportation hub for the ferry between Gudvangen and Flåm on the spectacular Naerøyfjord and the Aurlandfjord. You can do a modified Norway in a Nutshell.
- train Bergen to Voss
- bus Voss to Gudvangen
- ferry Gudvangen to Flåm
- Flåmsbana Flåm to Myrdal
- train from Myrdal to Bergen
This can be a DIY or you can book the package through FjordTours.
Without including the ferry, you would need to book the train from Bergen to Myrdal, the Flåmsbana roundtrip to Flåm and the train from Myrdal to Bergen.
There are also bus tours from Bergen that includes the ferry.
It is the journey to Flåm, including the ferry, that makes going to Flåm worthwhile.
Jeanm gave you the best suggestions here especially for train travel.
I agree the ferry on Naerøyfjord was the highlight. I also went to Stegastein viewpoint which was breathtaking. I didn’t care for trains so took one of the roundtrip bus (mini-van) tours from Bergen. It also stopped at the waterfall near Voss.
Thanks for the tips!

Given that you are less than a month out, you may run into problems finding openings on the Flamsbana train (depending on the date) especially if there are cruise ships docked at Flam. FjordTours allows you to book a Bergen to Bergen route, try plugging in your date and see what is available. Good luck.
