Nutshell on our own: Car Rental

We will be traveling middle of August to middle of September 2025. We are planning on taking the train from Oslo to the Myrdal/Flam area. We want to stay 4 or 5 days in the area. We want to rent a car to go visit the Stave churches in the area, stay at Eplet bed and breakfast, take hikes, drives described in the guidebook, etc. I know we won't need a car from the train to do the Flam railway and the Fjord boat tour if we stay in that area. So thinking of splitting the stay maybe 2 nights in the the Flam area and 3 nights at the Eplet. Or maybe not. Maybe we get the car for the whole entire time for more flexibility, because I don't know that I really want to actually stay in Flam. Maybe stay in Aurland instead.

But I just can't figure out how to get a rental car. It looks like I could maybe rent a car in Voss, but that means a lot of backtracking. Or SOG, but that is way across the water.

Rick has tons of info for drivers about that area and cool roads and such, but no suggestions about how to actually pick up a rental car in the area. HELP!

WHERE do you want to rent a car? Flam? I see Flam has car rentals. Or are you looking at the other towns and trying to rent from them?

Just rent the car in Voss: it has a rail station; so take the train from Oslo to there leaving out Myrdal.
In Flåm (by car) you can also take the train to Myrdal - and back (just 2 hrs).

Unfortunately getting out to Eplets Bed and Apple in Solvorn is much more difficult now that the car rental place in Balestrand has closed. It looks like there's a couple of bus lines that will take you from Flam to Sogndal Airport and from there you can rent a car to Eplets. https://www.nor-way.no/en/ and https://www.vybuss.com/#!/. Just so you aren't surprised you do know that Eplets is a hostel, not a B&B, yes? So you have to buy and prepare your own food. It's also shared bathrooms. I don't believe there are any en suite rooms.

Whenever I search for car rentals for Flam I get the SOG airport. In fact, Voss and SOG seem to be my only two options.

Thanks Mark, maybe Voss is what we should do. We were wanting to do the railway from Flam to Myrdal and then bike or hike down.

Anywhere in the area would be fine as long as I could get to it from the train with a direct bus. (Which we will have carryons and backpacks if that matters.

I had to rent 2 cars (8 people) in Voss. One problem - train didn’t arrive in Voss until after the Hertz office closed. (Also, the rental office is some distance from the train station.) I called the Hertz office in Voss from the US and talked to a delightful person who spoke perfect English. He arranged for the cars to be ready at the hotel adjacent to the train station. All the paperwork has been filled out online in advance. I’m hoping all this works out; but, I won’t know until we arrive in about 10 days.
