Norwegian Krone needed in Norway or just a credit card

I will be traveling to Oslo, Flam, Loen and Bergen, Norway. Is it feasible to pay with only a credit card? I will also be going to Denmark, Sweden and Iceland on this trip and would like to avoid getting all those different currencies. When in England recently did not use cash at all.

Norway has far more places that will refuse to take cash than will require it. I spent around 3 weeks in Norway in 2022, and I needed cash (coins, specifically) exactly twice:

  • For a luggage locker at the train station in a smallish town you're not going to.
  • For a toilet in Ekebergparken in Oslo, also not likely to be on your agenda.

Cash is so little used in Norway that you will have a very difficult time--at least in Oslo--finding a bank-operated ATM. I wouldn't worry about it.

Sweden isn't quite as far along the "We don't want your cash" path as Norway, but still cards can be used nearly everywhere. I did use money occasionally, but that was mostly because I wanted some souvenir coins. I honestly don't remember where I used cash, but I suspect it was at little supermarkets; they're a convenient place to break currency notes if you want some small coins. I'm sure I could have used a credit card instead.

I haven't been to Denmark or Iceland in decades so am of no help there.

Very likely yes, except you find the very, very rare case that somebody wants cash. Same for Denmark and Sweden.

This past August, we did need cash in Bergen one morning for breakfast as the card system was down at the time. The owner told us where the closest ATM was so we went there. Otherwise we used cards for everything, but we were also not off the beaten path anywhere.

We go to Iceland often and while it is mostly cards used, there are places that are cash only. Where are you headed there? I can think of one hike that is cash only, a hot spring that is cash only, two waterfalls that are cash only, laundry at a campground, and several toilets along the south coast that were cash only, etc. So yes cash is good there, but you don't need much. Much depends on just where in the country you will be going. I can be more specific if you let me know how long you will be there, where and how many people. Then I can give you an estimate.

Denmark - most recent trip summer 2023 with other visits earlier - I used no cash in several week-long stays. I was primarily in cities and day tripping areas.

Norway - summer 2023 for 2 weeks - no cash and noticed lots of signs discouraging cash usage. I read that in October 2024, Parliament passed a law that businesses must accept cash, but I don't see articles indicating that cash is being required or cash usage is growing.

In 2023 we used credit cards for all transactions with the exception of a few Krone for the laundry on our Hurtigruten ship. The ship reception desk just billed our cabin for that.
