Looking for suggestions other than car rental or flight. Hoping to travel along the coast or as close to as possible.
I have investigated Hurtigurtin for a short haul trip but the date we wish to travel ( September 28, 2019) will not be sold for short haul 1 way trips unless they have last minute space availability ie. if they don’t sell out the long haul space. Does anyone have any hints tips regarding booking of last minute space at that time of year?
We are 2 seniors and do not wish to rent a car and drive along the coast. Does anyone know of a bus/small shuttle or driver for hire service that takes the coastal road?
How close to the coast is the rail between Trondheim and Bergen ? ( we will be doing the Flam from Bergen back to Oslo so don’t want to do it twice).
Lots of questions I know but I have not found answers to the above. I have checked with tour services and NIN but they want us to purchase everything through them. We have already planned our own itinerary and wish to stick to it. Would appreciate any feedback/suggestions. Thank you!
The train does not go along the coast and it does not link Trondheim and Bergen directly; you have to go to Oslo and connect there.
If you look at a map you will see why. The coast is so dissected by fjords that travel in a straight line is difficult. The road is mostly a series of long tunnels through mountains, connected by ferry transfers across the fjords. It has been 20 years since I drove that road but I still remember the tunnels more than the scenery.
How are you getting to Trondheim?
Between Bergen and Trondheim you can use Hurtidruten ship but this do not approach Oslo. May be some cruise ships approach all three destinations - but also late sason for cruise ships.
As mentioned rail is much centralised (map) and neither directly connected nor close to coast. What you could do is using rail Oslo - Stavanger by train, Stavanger - Bergen by ferry or bus and Bergen - Trondheim by Huritgruten ship (port-to-port, online booking only on Norwegian website).
Be aware that end of September the weather can be very rough at Norwegian Sea.
I think you mean Hurtigruten would not sell a cabin, not space. there is always space at the last minute but you will might have to sleep on the floor of the bar. Still, you get full use of the facilities during the day (might have to eat on shore. I don't know. ask Hurtigruten). Or travel Hurtigruten by day & stay ashore every night.
Did you ask Hurtigruten how likely it is to have last minute space? Did you offer to book a suite?
