I have a few questions regarding the trains. If anyone that has experience with the trains there and can help I would appreciate it! We are doing the RS Scandinavian tour in July; but afterward visiting relatives. I am planning to buy Eurail tickets, but will buy 4 day versus 3 day if I can find a train that goes from Gjovik to Trondheim. All I am seeing is a bus. Not sure if I am reading correctly; a little confusing.
Also, if we take the night train from Stavanger to Oslo, are we missing a lot of great scenery? Was thinking of flying to save time, but cheaper and "greener" to take train.
I know I am asking a lot, but would welcome any suggestions! Thank you
There are no trains from Gjøvik to Trondheim. You can take the train all the way, but you need to make a detour via Oslo for that to work. The easiest way is to take a bus across the lake and take the train from Moelv or Lillehammer.
If you want to save time from Stavanger to Oslo, the night train is a great option. But, the day train lets you see all the views. Also, unless you really want the flexibility I'm not sure a eurail pass is a good idea for this trip.
Thank you for your knowledge again! I was going to go Eurail pass because had 3 possible train trips if we took the train from Stavanger to Oslo; 4 if we took from Gjovik to Trondheim. Counting discount on our ferry thought may be worth it?
My guess is that single tickets will be cheaper. But that is just a guess and you have to do the maths to be sure.
Another option to get from Gjøvik to Trondheim is to take the boat across Mjøsa to either Hamar or Lillehammer and catch the train there. This won't save time, but might be fun. https://www.skibladner.no
Thanks! That sounds awesome!! I will check that out. Appreciate the suggestion!
