Norway Itinerary, including extended NIN - advice, please.

We have 7 nights dedicated to Norway and would appreciate some thoughts on our itinerary:

Days 1 & 2 - Arrive by overnight ferry on Day 1. Sleep Oslo 2 nights. See the Bygdoy area, National Museum, Vigeland Park, City Hall and do a free walking tour.

Day 3 - Start NIN to Flam. Take boat to Balestrand. Sleep Balestrand.

Day 4 - Sightsee around Balestrand, sleep Balestrand.

Day 5 - Express boat back from Balestrand to Flam, reconnect to NIN in Flam. Sleep Bergen

Day 6 - See & sleep Bergen

Day 7 - Late flight back to Copenhagen (depart for the US the next day)

My questions:

  • Are 2 full days/nights enough time to see Oslo and should we take a night out of NIN to stay longer in Oslo?
  • Are there other sights in Oslo we should see?
  • Is 2 nights Balestrand and 2 nights Bergen too much time?
  • I read that the boat/bus/train from Flam to Bergen is more scenic than just taking the speed boat from Balestrand to Bergen. Is it worth it to take the express back to Flam to see this?

As always, thank you!

That’s almost my exact itinerary we’ll be taking in mid-May, except we’re taking the train back to Oslo at the end. I’ll be interested to see any comments.

My son and I are doing a 10 day-trip in May (with the express two-fold purpose of showing him his birthplace :-) and watching the May 17th celebration), Bergen - Balestrand - Oslo - Copenhagen. Quintessential plane, train, automobile AND boat trip. We're doing only one night in Balestrand. Wanted to leave more time for Oslo since that's where he was born. As for additional sights there that you might consider (if you were to shorten the overnights in Balestrand, for example), Akershus Fortress and the resistance museum, the Munch Museum, the National Gallery, and the Opera House. If you were a die-hard "ABC's Wide World of Sports" fan back in the day, the Holmenkollen ski jump ("agony of defeat") is a nice side trip. Beautiful view over Oslo.
