I am a frequent reader of the forum and appreciate the help and advice I've received over the years. I'm traveling to Norway and Stockholm w/ my 2 teenagers (17, 19) in July. (total trip 9 nights). We arrive in Bergen, stay for 3 nights. I've booked my NIN with an overnight in Flam (to get an extra day for hiking and exploring). I'm a little stuck on day trips out of Bergen. I'm trying to avoid renting a car and overlapping travel with the NIN. I'd really like to explore the Hardangerfjord area, but that seems to involve Voss (which is part of NIN). People have linked a ferry from Bergen to Rosendal (which goes thru Hardangerfjord), but we'd like time to explore the Hardanger area a bit more than the ferry allows. I'm also considering the Mostaumenfjord cruise, but heard it's rather touristy (not a problem, just a fact). Suggestions? We enjoy hiking, great food and don't mind going a bit off the beaten path. THANKS!
The route you are looking at that includes Voss is just over an hour of overlap with the NIN. Normally I try to avoid overlapping and backtracking, but for an hour, if you like the rest of the itinerary, you should consider it.
Without knowing what you are wanting to see and do in the Hardangerfjord area, here's a possible route by public transportation that avoids Voss
- Express ferry Bergen to Rosendal, 8:50- 10:35
- Explore area
- Depart Rosendal 4ish. There are several routes to Bergen by a combination of buses and/or ferries. This gives you different scenery from the express ferry.
And don't overlook the day hikes around Bergen.
