Norway in a Nutshell Tour

MY husband and I are planning on doing the NIN tour the end of June 2026 from Oslo to Bergen. Is it doable to do it all in one day? Also, what do you do for food/meals along the way to Bergen?

We did it in one day. A bit rushed, but doable. At one transfer point, towads the end, the food choices were kind of dismal. I advise taking some snacks along. Just in case . . .

I did this option, pre-Covid, also in June.. I chose the very first train of the day (early) and the (very slow!!!) boat to Bergen package NIN plan instead of the bus (which I think is quicker) also offered. There was a cafeteria and other options for food/snacks at Flam and the boat had a cafe, too.
It was definitely evening (maybe 7pm?) when we docked in Bergen.
I was able, thanks to the RS guidebook, to see everything I wanted in Bergen the next (albeit a busy one) day prior to boarding the Hurtigruten ship.

Yes, it's doable in one day. It's a long day, but an enjoyable one.

We did it in reverse, and we had no problem getting food.

There is a concession on the ferry. (Note: It's busy, and I didn't want to line up for food and miss any scenery, so I didn't use it.)

We had time to eat in Flåm while waiting for the Flamsbana. Not sure about the timing for the reverse trip.

Myrdal station, at the top end of the Flamsbana, has vending machines, plus you can preorder a take away meal from the cafe there.

You could also bring some snacks with you before you start, I think.

It can be done in one day. It's a very long day. I'd suggest breaking up the day with an overnight in Flam. I stayed at the Fretheim Hotel and had their amazing buffet dinner.

The hotel is less than 100 yard from the rail station and the ferry dock.

In May 2023 we did the NIN from Bergen to Oslo with an overnight in Flåm. This gave us time to take the wonderful minibus tour to Stegastein Viewpoint.

We started in Bergen and brought sandwiches to have a picnic on the fjord at Gudvangen. The next morning we again picked up a sandwich to have on the train from Myrdal to Oslo.

There is food available along the journey in Voss, Gudvangen, Flåm and Myrdal. There is also food available for purchase on the ferry between Gudvangen and Flåm as well as the train between Oslo and Myrdal.

Time available at the transfer points will depend on when you start the trip. I didn't take the earliest train from Oslo, because I was breaking the trip in Flam, so your schedule would be different from mine. I got a sandwich at the Myrdal station which was both better and less expensive (by Norwegian standards) than I was anticipating. I think they offered pancakes, too.

If your schedule allows a bit of time in Flam, you'll find a small grocery store and a cafe within walking distance of the port.

Note that lodging in Flam is greatly in demand, so if you should decide to spend the night there, you will need to search for lodging immediately.

I did NiN last June in one day. It is a long day but doable. I booked it on my own for a group of four. I did not use one of the travel companies, and it went very smoothly. Left Oslo around 8 AM, and got to Bergen I think around 9 PM in the evening. There are stops for food. Especially the town where you wait for the Fjord ferry. There is also food on the ferry , (and adult beverages!) Our ferry was packed, and the weather was horrible - so the hardest part may be finding a place to sit and eat on the ferry. We were happy to find some restaurants open for a late dinner in Bergen. But be warned Bergen is not a late night town, so dinner choices were pretty limited around 10 PM. Have a great trip!

My group pf 5 adults is doing the NIN June 9 or 10 from Bergen. This will be when the Bergen International Festival and Bergenfest overlap on June 10. Should we play it safe and buy a NIN Tour Package to have tickets purchased ahead now versus waiting to buy them individually ourselves 120 days out? This is our "must do activity" and are concerned that if we wait, due to extra tourists in Bergen for the festivals, tickets could sell out. Is it even possible one or more of the steps tickets could sell out? Would it be better to pay the extra $100 for a package with that considered? We are experienced international travelers. Thank you.

Lynne,

Yes, it is possible for segments of the Nutshell to sell out far in advance, especially if cruise ships are in Flåm.

Looking at June 10, the electric ferry segment between Gudvangen and Flåm only has 2 tickets available at the moment for the 12:10 departure. There are more tickets available on the 2:30 pm departure. I did not check June 9.

Hope this helps in your decision.

I am planning to do NIN myself in early June, but with a stay in Flam and Aurland. In checking on the classic ferry from Flam to Gunvagen, Lustrabaatane Line, those tickets are not yet available.
