We are planning a trip to Norway and are stuck on the logistics of the nutshell tour and trying to possibly see Balestrand as well. We will be in Oslo for one night upon arrival July 7, then are planning on taking the early train to begin the Nutshell Tour. We have 3 more nights to play with but need to take the night ferry to Copenhagen on July 11 (check in at 15:00). We wanted to stay in Balestrand, but can't figure out how to go there for 2 nights, see the rest of the nutshell tour and make it back to board the 15:00 ferry in Oslo. Is there a route that we are not thinking of or does anyone have recommendations given the amount of time that we have? Should we skip the Gudvangen and Bergen part of the nutshell tour or Balestrand? I am struggling with spending 2 nights in Balestrand, only to do essentially the entire nutshell in one day anyway. Any suggestions?

Gudvangen to Bergen is the least memorable leg of the NiN, but Bergen should be a not to miss destination. Spend at least a full day in Bergen before returning to Oslo.
Make sure you have your train reservations in July. July is the busy holiday month for Norwegians. Trains may be full of Norwegians early July heading for the mountains.

We flew into Bergen then took the Sogneford in a Nutshell because it stops in Balestrand. Stayed at the Balestrand Hotel ( strongly recommend) for two nights then did Flam and on to Oslo.
I would not skip Bergen.
