Norway in a Nutshell in March

Hello,

We are planning to travel to Norway third week of March, Oslo and Tromso to see the northern lights.

I was also planning to include Norway in a Nutshell for a day or 2 for the scenic train ride. Wanted to know will the route be covered in snow in late March? What is the possibility of encountering snowy landscapes around the route and the ferry tour at that time?

Also, for northern lights around 20-23 March, where can i see activity forecast or chances of planning a trip around those dates?

Thanks in advance.

Go for it. We did our first tour to Norway starting mid-March (Easter week that year) and ended early April. We did the Nutshell Oslo via Flam and boat to Voss the first day, second day to Bergen with an overnight stay, returning via train to Oslo the third day.

The Hardangervidda was definitely snow covered and the train departing Oslo the weekend before Easter was full and the luggage compartments filled with skis of families heading for the mountains. The Flamsbana descent to the fjord was spectacular, but scenery was brown and waterfalls were generally frozen and not flowing. In answer to your question about snow, yes snow.

Yet spring is one of transitions. We we got back to Oslo early April after two weeks in the mountains, spring flowers were starting to bloom and flower stalls were populated with spring blooms.
