Norway in a Nutshell Costs and Lodging

Help! I will be visiting Norway in Sept 2024 and want to book the Norway in a Nutshell self-guided tour from Oslo to Bergen. I will have a Eurail pass, so it looks like I need to do the following:

  1. Reserve a seat on the train from Oslo to Myrdal (Eurail pass covers train minus reservation fee, correct?).

  2. Take the Flamsbama train from Myrdal to Flam (as a rail pass holder, I will get a discount on this ticket purchase).

  3. Here is where it gets tricky because I want to stay overnight in Aurland. Do I need to catch a bus in Flam to get to Aurland? Do I then need to take the bus back to Flam the next day to embark on the fiord cruise?

Or, can I take the cruise on Day 1 from Flam to Aurland, leave the cruise in Aurland then rejoin and finish the cruise the next day from Aurland. If this is possible, do I purchase one cruise ticket from Flam to Aurland for Day 1 and a second ticket from Aurland to Gudvangen for Day 2? Or, can I buy one cruise ticket in Flam for the entire trip and use this ticket over two days? Also, will the Lustrabaatane ferry allow me to disembark at Aurland, or do I need to book through The Fjords to ensure I can leave the cruise at Aurland?

  1. At the end of the cruise, I will take the bus from Gudvangen to Voss.

  2. At Voss, I take the train to Bergen (rail pass covers this fee?).

Any confirmation of my thoughts or alternate ideas are greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure a Eurail pass will be worth it for this trip. But to answer your questions:

  1. Yes
  2. Yes
  3. You can take the the bus, or the boat. The Flåm-Gudvangen boats usually stop in Aurland on the way so you can get off there and catch the boat again the next day. Just note Aurland is a request stop and you need to notify them in advance. Norled's fjord route to Flåm can also take you to Aurland. Not sure if Lustrabåtane stops in Aurland though.
  4. Yes
  5. Yes.

Thank you for your quick response and for easing my anxiety!

I think the Eurail pass will come in handy since I will be traveling for 7 weeks (overall) in Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Do you agree the rail pass makes sense since I want to avoid a car rental?

Impossible to say without knowing your itinerary. But if you're just travelling Oslo-Flåm or Voss-Bergen one day, I think a Eurail pass will be a waste of money.

Also, the alternative to a pass is not a rental car. The alternative is just buying normal tickets.
