I will be going on a Norway Fjords cruise in August which will include stops n Haugesund, Alesund, Flam, Bergen.
It will be a multi generational trip where some may do things together and others may branch out. Where it makes sense I’d like to put together a few private excursions to try to see as much as possible. I’d also like to find something unique for the more adventurous, probably nature related. I would like to hear about memorable highlights from those that have visited any of these towns, and if you found a private tour guide that you loved, and why. Thank you!
Haugesund, Ålesund, Bergen are located at the coast. Bergen and Ålesund are towns with nice and interesting elements each - guide for explanations meaningful but also self-explorable. Both have a house mountain - Bergen's Mt. Floyen is easier to get up to by train.
Flåm is wide inside a fjord and makes excursions meaningful - more transport than guide task.
- Nærøyfjord
- Flåm train
- Stegastein
Without knowing how long you'll be in port:
Ålesund- We did a wonderful small group day tour to Trollstigen with LocalTrips AS in 2023. A highlight of our trip!
Flåm- the 2 hour minibus tour to Stegastein Viewpoint along with several other stops along the way. The views were spectacular. I believe there is now a tour that combines Stegastein with the Borgund Stave Church. Also, the ferry from Flåm to Gudvangen through the beautiful Naerøyfjord. For the adventure seekers, there is kayaking, hiking and ziplining available in Flåm.
Thank you everyone!
The highlight of our Norway trip was fjord swimming. The best experience was in Bergen where we found a place with lockets and showers and saunas and a diving tower and a heated pool. My SIL was just enthralled. He went every chance he got. I am an older person and I enjoyed the adventure. Makes you really tired, though.
The fjord swimming does sound like a fun adventure, but was it icy cold?
JudeK, My daughter and I will be there in July, and we plan on taking a kayak tour at Gudvangen through the Naeroyfjord. I know you are limited to certain cities, but Alesund has some kayak tours available on the Geirangerfjord. They offer several options: one for two and a half hours and one for four hours. https://www.geirangerfjord.no/guided-kayak-tours-kayak-rental
Also, have you checked with your ship? I don't know which Norway fjords cruise you're going on, but a lot of them offer their own excursions. For example, Hurtigruten it has an excursion where you can go kayaking on the Geirangerfjord. https://www.hurtigruten.com/en-us/extras/excursions/kayaking-in-alesund
dpoweron, can you share the name of the place you went to in Bergen? That sounds wonderful—thanks!
