Hi,
We are planning a driving tour of about six weeks or so (July and August 2018) split between Iceland, Denmark, Norway, southern Sweden, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, and Tallin. But, for us the high point will be the Norway fjords and other areas along the coast. We want to savor them without being too redundant. So, we are looking for suggestions regarding the time we should devote to driving the length of the long coast (we think Tromso may be the northern limit). We tentatively plan on doing one or more of the cruises out of Bergen (not Hurtigruten). Are there fjordes that are noticeably better to see by boat than car?
Geirangerfjord!! It's (IMHO) the most spectacular fjord in Norway. It's south of Tromso just inland from Alesund. I can't emphasize how beautiful this area of Norway is. Drive from Alesund to Hellesylt, then take the car ferry through the Geirangerfjord, and finally drive north, over the Trollstigen Pass. It is one of the best routes I've ever driven in the world.
Alesund and the area around it deserves at least 3 days of your time. We spent a month there one summer and would love to return.
