I want to see the most scenic places in 3 days out of Bergen. I can't figure out a logical sequence and all the ferries could slow me down. I also need to find inexpensive places to stay along the way. I especially like the pictures of fjords from above rather than down on the water and would love to hike to pulpit rock and other great overlooks. Help!
I don't have experience driving directly from Bergen, but I'll share what I did a few years ago. After taking the "Norway in a Nutshell" tour, I rented a car in Voss (the endpoint of the Nutshell tour). From there we spent a few days driving around the wonderful Sognefjord. we only had to take one short ferry. There are several great mountain roads in the area with amazing views of the fjord and surrounding mountains (particularly the Aurlandsvegen and the Stegastein viewpoint, as well as the Sognefjell road). Pulpit Rock is in the Lysefjord, near Stavanger, which is a five-hour drive south of Bergen. After dropping our car off in Voss, we ended up taking a train to Bergen and then a four-hour catamaran ride from Bergen to Stavanger. Stavanger is also a great little city and I can highly recommend Stavanger Bed and Breakfast.
