Norway Fjord Itinerary Needed

Hi
My husband, 10 year old daughter and I are planning a trip to Norway in mid - June. We are flying in and out of Oslo and have designated 4-5 days to the fjords. We don't want to do Norway in a Nutshell as we want to enjoy the nature as much as possible. Everything I see gives NIN and a few other things but I have yet to see a recommended itinerary for a few days focused on the Fjords. Any recommendations?
Thank you!

Do you want to travel by rental car?

NiN is using public tranport (trains, buses, ...), so even if you do not book it, you can be part of their crowd.

4-5 days from / to Oslo is not much time. Bergen would be a better starting point.

From Oslo you could start via official scenic route Hardangervidda into Hardanger fjord area. Back via Odda and E134 and finally the less known route Rjukan - Skien and to Oslo. Do not plan more than 250 km per day.

I'm in general agreement with MarkK about the National Tourist Routes. To get from Bergen to Oslo we drove for 6 days in a big "loop" on 7 of the National Tourist Routes to see rural Norway. We drove them in this order: Hardanger, Hardangervidda, Aurlandsfjellet, Gaularfjellet, Sognefjellet, Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, and Geiranger-Trollstigen followed by a dash to Oslo. I can recommend NTR roads for anyone who likes scenery. Since you have a bit less time allocated than we did, I think you could cut out the last 2 or 3 and still make your schedule. If you can't start in Bergen, just string together the Routes that seem possible out of and back in to Oslo. See info on NTRs at www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/routes. Look at the details for each Route on the NTR website and be aware that several of those I listed are rather narrow and steep with many switchbacks (you won't be driving fast, but isn't that the point?) Have a great time.

We enjoyed our fjords one week itinerary which was
1. Fly into Bergen, get rental car, drive to Voss. Stayed at Fleischer's Hotel for two nights. During our full day there we drove to see fjords east and south of Voss.

  1. Drive to Balestrand for two nights. Stayed in the old part of Kvikne's Hotel. (The newer part is not much better than a dorm!). Enroute from Voss to Balestrand we drove north and east and did the Flam train round trip. Then we visited a stave church and took the ferry to Balestrand.

  2. During our full day in Balestrand we drove a loop heading west and then north. That day was OK but probably the least interesting one.

  3. We then drove slightly east and then north to Geiranger and stayed at the XXXXhotel. for two nights. During our full day there we took a ferry ride which went west on the fjord then headed north and east up the next fjord. We could have used another night there to drive over the road to Alestand.

  4. Finally we took another ferry and headed to Bergen for one afternoon and evening. We stayed at the Clarion Hotel which had rooms facing the historic UNESCO bryggen.

I hope this helps.

Hi Ron ,
We picked up and returned the car at Bergen airport. The rental company was Hertz. It was very easy. I assume you saw my answer to your PM.
