northern norway itinerary

I'm trying to decide on a possible train/car route in northern norway sometime in august 2025. Lofoten Islands of course on our list (and will be visiting Svalbard). Not sure how much time we'll spend yet as the Svalbard piece isn't set yet. Possible hiking may be in the mix, yet again not sure yet. If you're willing to share your thoughts it would be much appreciated.

There are no trains in northern Norway, only rail network ends Bodø and Narvik.

Buses, ships and cars are the options. For cars have a look at the Norwegian scenic routes.

August is between months for nature experiences Northern Lights and Midnight Sun. For experiencing one of both you might change month of travel.

Consider Hurtigruten or Havila journeys (e. g. port-to-port) for getting along the beautiful coastal route.

North Cape and Tromsø are typical tourist destinations in that area.

I have a similar itinerary.. however, thinking of going to Lofoten islands around june-july 2025, more specifically to Reine.

What's the best way to get there?? fly to Bodo and take the ferry?? or are there better airport I should be exploring??

And if we want to get to Svalbard from Loften Island - which airport is ideal?

thanks..

Check Svolvær, Leknes, Harstad/Narvik (EVE) and if you like whale watching Andenes (Vesterålen).

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. We'll be heading to Svalbard from Oslo in August, and take a short cruise. My goal is the wildlife. My husband's is everything else. That piece of our journey is almost set. We'll return to Tromso and head south to the Lofoten Islands likely with a car. Return the car on the islands and take trains after. We will also be visiting relatives, I hope, and hope to see part of the homestead from way back when around Trondheim. Also interested in the Gerainger fjord area.
