NIN Oslo to Bergen - alternates to Flam for lodging

Short notice trip planning, so affordable Flam lodging is booked. What alternative stops should I look at so I don't have to do the NIN in one day with a family of 4?

There has never been much affordable lodging in Flåm.

What date do you need?

Basically it's Flåm, Gudvangen or Voss.

Aurland is near Flåm, but then you'll have transportation issues to sort out.

I'm looking at 8/12. I don't want to deal with transportation to an offshoot place unless I switch this to a car rental trip. It might make more economic sense to rent a car, but haven't done the math on that yet. A car would make going to a less crowded spot easier.

There is still availability at Brekke Apartments through Booking.com.

I have not stayed there. They also have hostel rooms with shared bathroom.

About a 15 minute walk to everything in town.

Take a look at the reviews. It looks like you can book now with free cancellation til July 13.

Flåm is very expensive due to high demand and short season. If you book it, there's a small grocery store in town for breakfast and even dinner supplies.

I'm renting a small car in Flåm and it's $220 for 24 hours, so not sure the car rental will make more economic sense. Perhaps the price is inflated in Flåm, I did not do the math on a driving trip. Plus you will likely want to ride the scenic train and boat anyway.

By boat. The Flåm-Gudvangen boats usually stop in Aurland, so it's an easy alternative to Flåm if you want to stay close to the water.

If you prefer to stay in the mountains you can consider Vatnahalsen, close to Myrdal.

We just stayed in Aurland with our family of 5. We got off our Naeroyfjord cruise in Aurland (just asked as we boarded). There is also a shuttle bus between Flåm & Aurland and the Nor-way bus connects both towns as well!

We really enjoyed staying in Aurland as there was a supermarket for easy meals, beautiful fjord views, and some hiking that we wanted to explore. We stayed in “Wangen Apartments.”
