We will be traveling to Bergen and then Oslo with my husband in early October. We land at 11 am in Bergen (Saturday) and have one day to spare till we need to leave for Oslo (Sunday). We would like to do the NIN trip. I was wondering whether it would be advisable to spend the night in Bergen and do the whole day trip to Oslo the next day or depart for NIN on the day of arrival and stay somewhere along NIN? I am afraid that with shorter days in October we may miss some of the views on the train from NIN - Oslo. What would be your advice?
Thank you ahead.
When I did the trip, I did it the reverse way from Oslo to Bergen. However, I split the trip by staying overnight in Flam. (It's where you will switch from the ferry to the Flambasa train.
I went in May. The reason I split it up was my concern for the sun going down--although not that early--and it being a very long day otherwise.
I stayed at the Fretheim Hotel in Flam. It's a three minute walk to the train and ferry terminals. Their dinner buffet was amazing.
The first time we did the NIN it was mid to late October. We did it in one day from Oslo to Bergen. It was a long day and we did miss the last parts scenery as it was dark, but we still loved it. I would not try to start the NiN the same day as arriving from the US if that is what you are thinking.
In May 2023 we did a DIY Nutshell from Bergen to Oslo with an overnight in Flåm so we could go to Stegastein Viewpoint.
In your case, I would spend the night in Bergen (it really deserves a couple days) and do the Nutshell in 1 day. IMO, a day in Bergen is more rewarding than the last few hours of train to Oslo.
I would do the NIN from Bergen the next day. Start as early as possible. The latter part of the train trip into Oslo will not be much of a scenic miss. Be prepared, NIN in one day is very lengthy, but worth it. Too bad you don't have more time in Bergen.
